CNN Legal Analyst Says Bombshell Indictment ‘Eviscerates’ GOP’s Biden Impeachment Case: ‘Completely Discredited’
CNN legal analyst Elliot Williams said House Republicans’ nascent impeachment case against President Joe Biden has been “completely discredited” thanks to the indictment of a star witness.
Republicans have long claimed that Hunter Biden ran an international influence-peddling scheme from which his father received millions of dollars.
Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI informant who was arrested on Thursday and charged with lying to the Bureau, told agents that Joe Biden and Hunter Biden each received $5 million from Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company on whose board Hunter served. The alleged sums were paid by Burisma so that the elder Biden – who was vice president at the time – would “protect us” from “all kinds of problems.”
The federal indictment alleges that Smirnov’s claim, which undergirds Republicans’ charge that Joe Biden engaged in corruption while vice president, was a lie.
Appearing on CNN’s The Situation Room on Thursday, Williams said the indictment seems to undermine their case:
It eviscerates an impeachment effort. Any evidence linking current President Biden to wrongdoing was pretty thin to begin with. But if people had it and could come forward with it and substantiate it, by all means, bring it. That’s how law enforcement works…
Now, I’m genuinely curious sort of as a citizen, as much as a former Hill staffer and prosecutor, what the folks on the Hill do with it now, because literally your star witness – his testimony has been completely discredited by law enforcement.
Guest host Brianna Keilar noted that the indictment is an allegation at this moment.
The House opened a formal impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden nearly a year after the House Oversight Committee began its investigation into the Bidens. Chairman James Comer (R-KY) appeared on Fox more than 200 times last year. Over time, Comer has expressed increasing confidence that the Bidens had engaged in corruption while Joe Biden was in office.
