CNN’s Dana Bash Calls Biden’s Trump Zinger ‘A Mic Drop Moment’

CNN anchor Dana Bash was taken with President Joe Biden’s zinger as a reporter asked about former President Donald Trump during an announcement of a bombshell prisoner swap, calling it a “mic-drop moment.”

News broke Thursday morning that unjustly detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich — as well as former Marine Paul Whelan, journalists Alsu Kurmasheva and Vladimir Kara Murza and others — were released in a massive prisoner swap with Russia.

On Thursday afternoon’s edition of CNN’s Inside Politics, Bash anchored as Biden gave remarks in the Roosevelt Room, and remarked on the president’s response to Trump’s frequent claim that he could get the hostages out without giving up anything:

REPORTER: Mr. President, when Germany asked for in response for their cooperation —

PRESIDENT BIDEN: Nothing.

REPORTER: President Trump has said repeatedly that he could have gotten the hostages out without giving anything in exchange. What do you say to that? What do you say to President Trump now, the former president?

PRESIDENT BIDEN: Why didn’t he do it when he was president?

DANA BASH: I think that was what they call a mic-drop moment at the end there. Why didn’t he do it when he was president?

What a historic moment. Watching and listening. President Biden, now trying to finish out his one and only term and doing so with, a tremendous, tremendous victory for these families of these people who were held, he said “innocently.”

They are innocent people. They were held without, without reason and most importantly, the people who are coming home. He said when he spoke to them. “Welcome almost home.”

And, Jim Sciutto and one of the things that struck me before they got to the Q&A, which we can talk about in a second — allies matter.

JIM SCIUTTO: No question. I mean, this was this was half a dozen countries involved, and he, the US president, was asking for difficult things for them to give.
