NEW: Police Warn Public Stay Away From #NoKings Trump Protest After Shooting of MN Democrats
The Minnesota Police are urging residents to stay away from planned “No Kings” protests against President Donald Trump in the state as a manhunt is underway to capture a suspect behind the shooting of two Democratic state lawmakers.
“Given the targeted shootings of state lawmakers overnight, we are asking the public to not attend today’s planned demonstrations across Minnesota out of an abundance of caution,” police said in a statement.
Police included a photo with their statement from inside the at-large suspect’s vehicle which included flyers for the planned “No Kings” protest.
Multiple protests were canceled in the wake of the shootings but some are still planning on pushing ahead. The demonstrations are part of what’s being called “No Kings” protests against Trump and the military parade in Washington, D.C.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) reported at a Saturday press conference that Democratic State Sen. John Hoffman of Champlin and Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park were shot in what appears to be “politically motivated” attacks.
Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, are in stable condition after being treated at a hospital for gunshot wounds.
Walz also released a statement on Saturday urging people to avoid protests until the shooting suspect has been apprehended.
“Out of an abundance of caution my Department of Public Safety is recommending that people do not attend any political rallies today in Minnesota until the suspect is apprehended,” he said.
Police issued a shelter-in-place order on Saturday morning a 3-mile radius of the Edinburgh Golf Course. The suspect, according to authorities, dressed as a police officer to gain access to the homes of Hortman and Hoffman, which are approximately five miles apart.
In a Saturday statement, Trump responded to the “targeted attacks.”
“I’ve been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against State Lawmakers,” he said. “Our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the FBI, are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law. Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!”
