President Donald Trump sparked a wave of anger and criticism on Monday when he told Dan Bongino that “Republicans oughta nationalize” voting and the federal government should take over running elections in “at least 15 places.”
“These people were brought to our country to vote, and they vote illegally,” Trump said, repeating a baseless claim he regularly makes about illegal immigration and voting.
“And it’s amazing the Republicans aren’t tougher on it. The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over, we should take over the voting in at least 15 places.’” Trump was primarily talking about Minnesota, and he claimed he “won the state three times, but got no credit for it.” The last GOP presidential candidate to win Minnesota was Richard Nixon in 1972.
He later added, “The Republicans oughta nationalize the voting.” Of course, Article I of the U.S. Constitution solely gives the states the power to run elections.
Trump’s call to take over elections in states he loses led to a quick bevy of replies from pundits and political leaders, many of whom argued Trump’s comments represent a threat to electoral integrity in the country.
Fox News host Jessica Tarlov, the left-leaning co-host of The Five, shared the comments and added, “He’s a mad man and is just straight up telling us that they’re going to meddle with the election.”
Veteran conservative pundit and “Never Trump” advocate Bill Kristol added, “We can’t say that we weren’t warned.”
Former Republican Congressman Justin Amash (R-MI) added, “Republicans should not, in fact, ‘nationalize the voting.’ If you were worried about election integrity before, this would make things infinitely worse. Decentralized elections are one of the greatest protections against large-scale fraud and abuse.”
