PA Gov. Josh Shapiro Speaks Out After the Attempted Assassination of Trump in His State — Calls On ‘All Leaders’ to ‘Take Down the Temperature’

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) is speaking out following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, PA.

At a press conference Sunday, Shapiro confirmed the identity of the man killed in the attack — Corey Comperatore — and relayed the substance of his conversation with Comperatore’s wife, who said the ex-volunteer fire chief died protecting his family.

“Corey died a hero,” Shapiro said. He added, “Corey dove on his family to protect them last night at this rally. Corey was the very best of us.”

Shapiro opened his remarks by condemning the attack.

“The assassination attempt on the former President Donald Trump last night is absolutely unacceptable and tragic,” Shapiro said, adding that his wife, “Lori and I are grateful that the former president is safe and according to him and his team is fine.”

The governor added, “Last night was shocking for this community and for this Commonwealth, and I know for this country. Political disagreements can never, ever be addressed through violence. These disagreements are OK, but we need to use a peaceful political process to settle those differences. This is a moment where all leaders have a responsibility to speak and act with moral clarity. Where all leaders need to take down the temperature and rise above the hateful rhetoric that exists and search for a better, brighter future for this nation.”
