Watch This Cringeworthy Montage of Media Hyperventilating Over ‘Worse Than Watergate’ Trump Phone Logs Story — That Fell Apart

The conservative media watchdog Newsbusters put together a montage of TV journalists falling over themselves to report last week that there was a nearly eight-hour gap in the White House call log on Jan. 6.

The cringeworthy supercut video shows just how sure some of TV news’ most familiar faces were former President Donald Trump had finally been permanently destroyed.

The supposed bombshell fell apart, as Mediaite founder Dan Abrams noted on his nightly NewsNation show last week.

The Washington Post and CBS initially reported that a gap in the records had been unearthed by the Jan. 6 committee.

Everyone from CBS’s Norah O’Donnell to MSNBC’s Chris Hayes fell over themselves to cover what was purported to be a story more sinister than Watergate. Reporters with CNN, ABC News and NBC News also furiously reported the potential erasure or destruction of records and the implications of the “missing” logs.

It was supposed to be a smoking gun — one that would finally imprison the country’s 45th president. But the story fizzled after a stunning admission from CNN’s Jamie Gangel.

“There are no missing pages and the seven-hour gap is likely explained by use of White House landlines, White House cell phones and personal cell phones that do not go through the switchboard,” Gangel reported.

Even after that report indicating nothing had been altered or deleted, MSNBC’s Tiffany Cross continued to press the idea of deletions or erasures, and the idea that there was a White House conspiracy along those lines remains persistent.

Trump’s communications from that day that did not go through the switchboard are not yet specifically accounted for, CNN reported in their article about the logs, and John Bolton insists the idea that Trump was using “burner phones” — which would not be logged — is not implausible.
