Baier, Van Susteren Defend Clinton Interviews: We Weren’t Going for ‘Gotcha’ Moment
Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Greta van Susteren defended their interviews with Hillary Clinton last week against criticism that they had gone too soft on the former Secretary of State. The two pointed out to Media Buzz’s Howard Kurtz Sunday morning that they were more in search of information from Clinton than they were a headline.
“There’s not always going to be this, ‘Dude that was two years ago’ moment,” Baier said, referring to a comment from former National Security spokesperson Tommy Vietor on Benghazi that went viral. “I don’t think in interviews, trying to get news, that somebody should plan to try to get somebody to that point.”
“That’s a little bit, almost, entertainment,” van Susteren said. “There was no sort of grand strategy, to try to get a gotcha. It was to try to get information for the viewers.”
But both anchors knew they weren’t going to please everybody. “I think Brit Hume was right,” Baier said, “the criticism was going to come no matter what.”
For the record, Kurtz thought they did great.
