Bill Maher dismissed outrage over President Donald Trump’s construction of a ballroom in the White House which has left the building’s East Wing demolished in the meantime.
“The ballroom, I don’t give a s**t,” Maher told Bill O’Reilly and Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) on Friday’s Real Time. “I was reading — it shows you how the media is. Everything is always on one side or the other. When [Trump] first mentioned it, it was all about, ‘Oh, my God, he’s desecrating the White House.’ Then I finally read, ‘Oh, well, they’ve done s**t to the White House before.'”
Maher declared it’s “just a building” against the backlash over the renovations. He also argued that the White House may have needed a little sprucing up anyway.
“I realized after reading other people, we don’t have a place when they have state dinners,” the comedian said. “They’re doing it in a tent! This is America! So do I give a s**t that he’s doing this to the White House? I really don’t.”
Maher actually hit the panic button for some last month when he argued Trump’s ballroom construction is a sign that he has no intention of leaving the White House when his second term has ended.
“He’s not leaving! That’s what bothers me about it!” he said at the time.
Trump’s $300 million ballroom is being completely privately funded, according to the White House. The president called it reports he wants to name it after himself “fake news” while speaking to reporters last month.
“Well, we’ve raised a lot. We’ve raised over $350 million. It’s a beautiful room, a big room. I don’t have any plan to call it after myself, that was fake news,” he said. “Probably gonna call it the Presidential Ballroom or something like that. We haven’t really thought about a name yet.”
