Carl Bernstein: Trump’s Willing to ‘Risk a Constitutional Crisis’ to Avoid Accountability

Anderson Cooper and his panel tonight reacted to the big news of 1) President Trump wanting Rod Rosenstein fired, and 2) how he wanted Robert Mueller fired in December.

The Times report on the latter makes it very clear Trump wanted the special counsel’s office “shut down” over reporting that they were looking into his Deutsche Bank business ties, which turned out to not be the case.

Cooper asked Carl Bernstein, “Do you feel like we’re on the verge of a Saturday Night Massacre here?”

“We’re in a constitutional crisis,” Bernstein bluntly responded. “The President of the United States has made clear to those around him… that he is determined to shut down this investigation.”

He continued:

“We have a President of the United States willing to risk a constitutional crisis for this nation so he can avoid legitimate investigation and letting the facts roll out the way they ought to to the end of an investigation. And if it’s a witch hunt, there’s plenty of time at the end and there’d be hell to pay if Mr. Mueller or anybody else… were conducting a witch hunt. This is no witch hunt. This is about a lawless President of the United States determined to avoid accountability.”

Jeffrey Toobin noted at one point, “If Robert Mueller is fired and this investigation technically still exists but there’s no one in charge of it, Donald Trump wins.”
