CNN Panel Addresses Kellyanne Conway’s Clash With Dana Bash: Sounded Like She Made a ‘Threat’

After presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway made headlines for her face-off this morning with CNN host Dana Bash, anchor Fredricka Whitfield hosted a panel on the clash during which political analyst Ryan Lizza called Conway’s earlier comments “threatening.”

It all started when Bash asked Conway about her husband’s now deleted tweets criticizing President Donald Trump, suggesting a conflict was at play since Conway works for Trump.

In response, Conway claimed the question was asked on the basis of gender rather than her political career, calling it “fascinating to me that CNN would go there” and that “it’s very good for the whole world to just witness that it’s now fair game how people’s spouses and significant others may differ with them.”

Lizza interpreted that response as a challenge.

“To me it almost sounded like a threat,” he said. “‘Well, you’re talking about a spouse, so maybe I should talk about your spouse,’ and I think that is a real misunderstanding of what the difference is between a public official who is on the government payroll and… the territory that comes along with that versus private citizens, journalists, who are trying to keep a check on those in powerful positions. And I really was a little surprised that she sort of went up to the line of almost sounding like she was threatening people with that response.”

However, Alice Stewart, a Republican strategist and friend of Conway’s, said “she was actually really happy to have the opportunity to address these tweets which have been out there for quite some time.”

Conway’s husband, George Conway, is a prominent attorney who is known to have expressed markedly different views from hers on the president online.
