CNN’s Gergen on Trump’s Re-Election Fundraiser: He Should Focus on Being a ‘Good President’ First

With President Trump holding a re-election fundraiser at his hotel tonight, CNN’s David Gergen said maybe in his first year the President should focus more on governing and worry about his re-election down the road.
Gergen said that Trump just doesn’t have many “legislative victories” to tout yet, though he did note the successful Neil Gorsuch appointment.
But he went on to criticize the “permanent campaign” mentality:
“You would think tonight that the President would be scrambling, doing everything he could, to rescue the health care reform bill which is now in serious trouble in the Senate… We’re 159 days since his inauguration. We’re 1124 days until the next election. You would think the emphasis would be on trying to be a good president right now and then let the re-election take care of itself down the road.”
And just to be clear, yes, the President is planning to run in 2020:
Sarah Huckabee Sanders says "of course" Donald Trump is running for re-election.
