CNN’s John Berman Guts Kevin McCarthy’s Revisionist History Over Trump, Capitol Riot
CNN’s John Berman ripped House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy over his wishy-washy revisionism on the insurrection fomented by former President Donald Trump.
“Kevin McCarthy added a new chapter to revisionist history,” Berman summed up on New Day. “Or tried to erase a chapter of actual history. Or maybe he just made stuff up.”
Berman’s segment revolved around an interview McCarthy did on Sunday, during which, Fox News’s Chris Wallace grilled the minority leader about the alleged, profane he had with Trump while the ex-president’s supporters were violently storming the U.S. Capitol. McCarthy refused to give Wallace a straight answer to his questions, eventually landing on the explanation that “my conversations with the president are my conversations with the president.”
In Berman’s video essay, he repeatedly likened McCarthy’s reactions to the iconic scream of Home Alone protagonist Kevin McCallister. The CNN host began by mocking McCarthy’s claim that he was literally the first person to tell Trump the Capitol was under attack.
To believe this, you have to buy into the notion that no one in the White House staff, no one in the intelligence community, no one in the world, including the MyPillow guy, told the president a riot was happening a mile and a half away…We know what [Trump] does more than anything else is watch TV. It’s his superpower. TiVo is his tesseract.
Berman continued to mock McCarthy for going back and forth over Trump’s culpability over the riot, and for speaking positively about the video Trump put out to address the mob (even though it had the same false election claims that fueled the insurrection in the first place). Berman concluded that the difference between Kevin McCarthy and Kevin McCallister is that the latter “learned from his mistakes. [McCarthy] just tries to erase the historical record of them.”
