Jon Stewart Provides WWE-Style Play-By-Play To Trump, Zelensky ‘Disastrous’ Meeting: ‘Nut Shot To the Hopes and Dreams of Ukrainians!’
Jon Stewart argued on Monday that President Donald Trump’s wild oval office meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is far easier to follow if you happen to be a fan of professional wrestling.
On Monday’s The Daily Show, Stewart provided a WWE Smackdown-style commentary to the Trump and Zelensky meeting by pulling up a WWE wrestling match where John Cena turned “heel,” meaning villain, and provided Cody Rhodes with a “nut shot” and revealed himself to be aligned with Rhodes antagonist Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
“The best way that I can explain what happened, to show Americans how to process this new reality was with another shocking turn of events this weekend,” Stewart said before cutting to the WWE match.
According to Stewart’s metaphor, WWE champion Rhodes is the “people’s champ” with “unquestioned bravery,” like Zelensky, while Cena represented the United States as the man standing for “truth, justice.” Johnson, on the other hand, represents Russian President Vladimir Putin. Johnson at one point gave the go-ahead for Cena to attack Rhodes as Cena and Rhodes were embracing as friends.
During the White House meeting, things got heated between Zelensky and Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Both Vance and Trump told Zelensky to be more grateful for U.S. aid and Trump told Zelensky that he’s “gambling with World War III. A signing for a critical minerals deal was canceled after the meeting, and Zelensky was asked to leave the White House.
Stewart said on Tuesday:
“‘But sir, but, sir, I am smaller and weaker than you. It will take incredible bravery for me to protect my soul and the soul of my people. But luckily, I am not protecting my soul alone, for I have the support of the great John Cena!’ So Cody Rhodes, Zelensky, told Vladimir Putin, Rock, ‘no soul for you, motherfucker!’ And that’s when they met in the Oval Office. America went to hug Zelensky. But when America looked up, somehow Putin had given John Cena the international sign for ‘it’s time.’ And rather than repudiate Putin, America smelled what The Rock was cooking and through that borscht haze, America delivered the nut shot!”
“The nut shot to the hopes and dreams of Ukrainians everywhere! And then, for no reason, America jumped on Zelensky and started punching him in the face as many times as it could,” Stewart said as Cena kicked Rhodes between the legs and started punching him.
Stewart likened the turn to Zelensky being caught off guard with both the president and vice president digging into him and his handling of peace negotiations. Vance first laid into Zelensky and after Zelensky pushed back, Trump then got heated with Zelensky and suggested he was the holdup on a ceasefire deal as Ukraine continues fighting off a Russian invasion.
Stewart argued the shocked reactions in the media to the Zelensky meeting matched the shocked faces in the crowd for the WWE event.
“Too simplistic?” Stewart asked about the wrestling metaphor. “No! This is it!”
