Kevin McCarthy Dunks on Nancy Pelosi as ‘Lame Duck Speaker’ on a ‘Farewell Tour’ Who ‘Desecrated’ Congress

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) lambasted Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Sunday, claiming that her recent actions are part of a “lame duck speaker” on a “farewell tour.”

McCarthy was among those named in a request for records sent to telecommunications companies by the Jan. 6 select committee. On Sunday, he reiterated to Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo that he views the request as overreach and that Pelosi has not asked him about his phone records directly.

“I haven’t heard anything from her,” he said. “But remember, this is a select committee that is not a bipartisan committee. For the first time in history, Nancy Pelosi picked who could be on this committee. And what they’re trying to do, they’re missing the two main points: Why were we so ill-prepared on January 6th? And how do we make sure we’ll never be in this position again?”

“It’s purely politics,” he added. “And Congress does not have the right to go after mine or of your phone number records.”

The select committee is chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and includes two Republicans — Reps. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) — the only Republicans to have voted in favor of forming the committee.

After railing against Big Tech and surveillance, McCarthy went on to say that “a big problem that we have is what Nancy Pelosi has done in Congress.”

“She’s desecrated this institution,” he said. “Because now she’s made it almost impossible for the minority to get documents from the Biden administration so we can hold them accountable, not just on this [using Big Tech], but Afghanistan as well.”

“She now has proxy voting. There are Democrats that have not shown up for work for months but they still get their paycheck,” McCarthy continued. “She now fines members up to $5,000 if they walk through the wrong door going to the chambers. She selects who can be on committee, never before in a congress. She denied the minority the ability to even offer an amendment, something that hasn’t been done in the history of Congress.”

“But now why does she do that?” he added. “She’s a lame duck speaker. She’s on a farewell tour.”

Bartiromo then noted that Pelosi is currently out of the country, having met the Pope in the Vatican yesterday.

Pelosi offered members the ability to vote by proxy in light of Covid; that measure has since been extend through mid-November.

McCarthy unsuccessfully tried to petition the Supreme Court to block proxy voting after failing to get the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to take up the matter. The Supreme Court has not yet said whether they will accept the case, but it has garnered minimal GOP support. According to The Hill, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) is the only other Republican lawmaker to have signed on.

The $5,000 fines refer those imposed on lawmakers who bypass metal detectors to get to the House floor. The added security measures were installed in the wake of Jan. 6.
