Laura Ingraham: GOP Will Be Adrift Until They Figure Out ‘What They Stand For’
Guest-hosting for Bill O’Reilly tonight, Laura Ingraham delivered a reality check of sorts to the Republican party following their big defeat in the presidential election. Ingraham said that the factions of the GOP with disagreements over social issues need to drop their differences and unite behind a common conservative cause, because until they do, they’re going to remain in the political wilderness.
Ingraham said the GOP thinks President Obama has the upper hand in the fiscal cliff negotiations, but no matter what they do, they’re stuck. Giving in to Obama means letting down the conservative base that supported them; continuing to stand firm against Obama might earn them the ire of angry voters for failing to come to a consensus on the fiscal cliff negotiations.
Ingraham criticized Republican “defeatism” and made it clear that libertarians and social conservatives need to find some way to come together, because otherwise, the conservative movement appears to be divided.
“There is no conservative Republican consensus on globalization, immigration reform, the China threat, or on our Mideast policy. Conservatives couldn’t even agree on sensible steps on health care reform… the Republican party will continue to be adrift unless conservatives, still the most influential group within the party, have a clear sense of what they stand for and what policies will best serve their cause and the nation’s.”
But in spite of how bad things look for the GOP, Ingraham remained bullish about the party being able to overcome its problems, just as it has in past decades.
