Meghan McCain Clashes With View-Mates in Fiery Debate Over the ‘Trump Cult’: ‘LET ME FINISH!’
Meghan McCain already had some fierce commentary with her colleagues during the opener of The View today. But things heated up again during the very next segment, when the ladies held a discussion on how Trump has “brainwashed” the Republican Party.
The conversation began with the commotion that Trump caused with his Theresa May-bashing interview with The Sun, which he dismissed as “fake news” a day later. As Joy Behar noted the irony of Trump crying “fake news” against a Rupert Murdoch publication, guest co-host Tara Setmayer said the president’s supporters will always believe him over anything else because they’re all part of the Trump “cult.”
McCain asked Setmayer to stop calling it a “cult,” and the two ended up locking horns when Setmeyer said she plans to continue using the term.
“There’s a large group of people who blindly follow what this man says, that don’t think for themselves,” Setmayer said. “When he can get away with saying things on tape and talk about those things as if they’re fake news now, that is a cult.”
The two continued to spar with McCain objecting to the Setmayer’s broad-brush insult of Trump supporters, and Setmayer arguing that the Trump presidency will inevitably come at much too high a cost for any positives that come out of it. When McCain noted Trump has support from the majority of the GOP, Setmayer acknowledged those in the party who critique the president when they should, but there’s also, “a large group, including a lot of members of Congress, who have sold their principles down the river. They’re hypocrites.”
Sara Haines cut in to note that many prominent Republican figures abandoned the party for sacrificing its “humanity.” McCain jumped in and demanded that she be allowed to complete her point.
“LET ME FINISH!” McCain said.
She concluded by noting that she has more reasons to hate Trump than most, but she still wants to try and understand his voters, particularly those who felt as though “they didn’t have any other choice.”
