‘Pelosi Would Have Figured It Out’: Alyssa Farah Griffin Warns Democrats They’re Playing Right Into Trump’s Hands With Shutdown
The View’s Alyssa Farah Griffin warned Democrats that they’re playing right into President Donald Trump’s hands with the current government shutdown fight, arguing that Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) “would have figured it out” on Wednesday’s edition of The View.
While most of the table was in agreement that the current federal government shutdown can be blamed on Trump after Republicans and Democrats failed to come to a funding compromise, Griffin suggested that he would eventually prevail. Democrats are pushing for Affordable Care Act subsidies to be extended, something Griffin argued should have been taken care of in a standalone bill.
Griffin, a former communications official in Trump’s last administration, warned her co-hosts that Trump will likely come out on top in the fight against Democrats and that he wants the shutdown.
She argued:
There’s polling out there that says, well, 4% will blame Republicans and 23 are going to blame Dems. Another 34% of Americans blame both sides. Even on the Obamacare subsidies, you could pass it as a stand-alone bill. It does not need to be tied to shutting down the government. What I constantly hear is Donald Trump has too much power. The White House, the executive branch, has too much power. By shutting down the federal government, Congress, you’ve given up spending power.
Whoopi Goldberg argued Trump and Republicans are unwilling to “compromise.”
“Pelosi would have figured it out. I’m just saying,” Griffin said.
“Well, yeah, she did figure it out,” Goldberg said.
“She always figured it out,” Griffin added, referring to Pelosi’s time as Speaker of the House.
“And they denied it. They don’t want it. And this is really the other thing that we should have to know. We just need a better person to compromise with. We need somebody who is willing to compromise,” Goldberg said.
Pelosi herself has come out and placed blame on Republicans and the administration. In a vulgar rant before the shutdown, she told NBC that Trump has essentially told Democrats to “go f**k themselves.”
“The president has said, I hear what they’re saying. It’s all unserious and ridiculous. In fact, I’ve listened to their s**t and I tell them to go f**k themselves. I can’t believe I used that word. My kids will be shocked. My grandchildren will be further shocked. I’m just quoting the president of the United States,” she said.

They had months to offer it as a stand-alone bill but made the calculation to tie it to government funding in hopes it would bring Republicans to the table. This is why I say, earn your salary. $174,000 a year. Figure it out. Compromise, negotiate, do something but don’t shut it down.
WHOOPI GOLDBERG: You can only compromise with people — listen, he’s made it very clear.
GRIFFIN: Pelosi would have figured it out. I’m just saying.
GOLDBERG: Well, yeah, she did figure it out.
GRIFFIN: She always figured it out.
GOLDBERG: And they denied it. They don’t want it. And this is really the other thing that we should have to know. We just need a better person to compromise with. We need somebody who is willing to compromise. Listen, the man says, I’m going to work — what does he say — he says —
SARA HAINES: Who?
GOLDBERG: You know who said it. [He said] that he’ll go to work on Democrats during the shutdown. It’s like, why are you going to work on us? We’re trying to work with you. He wouldn’t meet with them.
HAINES: He wants to get rid of people in government.
GOLDBERG: He wants to get rid of stuff and we know.
GRIFFIN: But that’s my warning to Democrats. Donald Trump wants the shutdown. You guys shouldn’t have given what he wanted because it means he’s got a plan and I don’t think you’re going to like it.
