Piers Morgan Scolds Media for ‘Gleeful Vilification’ of Brian Williams

Daily Mail Editor-At-Large and former CNN host Piers Morgan decried the “new medieval phase” created by social media that allows for “viciousness” against media figures like Brian Williams.

In a Daily Mail column, Morgan argued that anyone of prominence is “tossed onto the furnace of righteous, indignant fury at the slightest suggestion they may not be as perfect as we’d like them to be.” Media Buzz host Howard Kurtz asked him about that suggestion on Sunday.

“Yes, he [Brian Williams] made a big mistake, but the way that people went on, you would’ve thought he had been a mass serial killer,” Morgan said. “And I just think there has to be some kind of restraint sometimes where, yes, you acknowledge the mistake, yes, you criticize, yes, you can berate Brian Williams, but the kind of gleeful vilification of him as a human being, the mockery, the general consensus that he has to be smashed to pieces, I found pretty unedifying.”

Morgan said he himself is no stranger to that kind of criticism, citing when he was fired from the Daily Mirror. According to Morgan, if he were given a second chance, he would have come out of that experience as a better journalist. And the same thing goes for Brian Williams, he said.

“America is the land of second chances, right?” Morgan said.
