‘You’re a Convicted Sex Trafficker’: Jake Tapper Can’t Believe Ghislaine Maxwell’s Demands for Testifying Before Congress

Convicted child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell is offering to testify before Congress as long as she is given immunity, according to a list of demands sent by her attorney to the House Oversight Committee.

Maxwell was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for her role in facilitating child sex trafficking with Jeffrey Epstein, who authorities say committed suicide in a Manhattan jail in 2019. She is appealing her conviction.

Epstein and Maxwell are back in the news after President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice declined to release the files regarding Epstein’s case. Many Trump supporters and others believe the files contain damning information about powerful figures. Trump was a friend of Epstein’s until the two had a falling out in the 2000s before Epstein was implicated in sex crimes.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer does not appear to be willing to take Maxwell up on her offer. Last week, he told CNN, “I don’t think there are many Republicans that want to give immunity to someone that may have been sex trafficking children.”

On Tuesday’s edition of The Lead, Kaitlan Collins said that in addition to immunity, Maxwell does not want to be deposed in the prison where she is serving her sentence and wants the questions in advance. Maxwell also said she would accept a pardon from Trump, who has not ruled that out.

“They believe that she should get those questions from the committee in advance,” Collins said. “What they said in the letter, her attorneys [said] that, quote, ‘surprise questioning would be both inappropriate and unproductive.’ So, they basically wanna know what the lawmakers would ask her before she sat down to actually answer those questions.”

Maxwell’s conditions were a bit too much for the host.

“It just seems so arrogant,” Tapper responded. “It’s like Beyoncé demanding her own trailer at Farm Aid. I mean, you’re a convicted sex trafficker. A little humility.”
