Bernie Sanders Admits Trump Right About ‘Cracking Down’ at Border, Says Democrats Should’ve Done ‘Much Better’ Job Last 4 Years
Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday that President Donald Trump made the right move in “cracking down on fentanyl and making sure the border is “stronger,” and added that Democrats should have done a “much better” job on illegal immigration than they did under former president Joe Biden.
Sanders joined Jon Karl for Sunday’s edition of ABC’s This Week on a variety of topics, one of which did not go especially well.
But on the topic of Trump and the border, Sanders both conceded that Trump has been right to “crack down” and admitted that Democrats did not do a good job when they had the chance.
Karl asked if there have been any things Trump has done right since taking office, and Sanders said there were.
“I mean, I think cracking down on fentanyl, making sure our borders are stronger,” the Senator said. “Look, nobody thinks illegal immigration is appropriate, and I happen to think we need comprehensive immigration reform, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for people to be coming across the border illegally.”
Karl pressed Sanders on why illegal immigration “exploded under Biden,” pointing out that “nothing was really done until his last year in office.”
Sanders did not dispute that, saying instead, “Yes, should have done much better. No argument.”
Although the border and illegal immigration were major factors in Trump defeating Biden, and despite what Sen. Sanders indicated on Sunday, Trump’s efforts to “crack down” have been met with enormous resistance among Democrats and in the press.
KARL: Is there anything that you think Trump has done right?
SANDERS: Yeah. I mean, I think cracking down on fentanyl, making sure our borders are stronger. Look, nobody thinks illegal immigration is appropriate, and I happen to think we need comprehensive immigration reform, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for people to be coming across the border illegally. So, we’ve got to work now on comprehensive immigration reform. The idea that Trump has, I don’t know what his latest numbers are.
He wants to deport 20 million people who are in this country who are undocumented. Well, you do that, you destroy the entire country. Because, I got news for you, Trump’s billionaire friends are not going to pick the crops in California that feed us. They’re not going to work in meat packing houses. That’s what undocumented people are doing.
So, we need a variety of programs, guest worker programs, but mostly comprehensive immigration reform.
KARL: But you know, illegal immigration, it exploded under Biden. And it had been high for times under Trump as well. But it exploded under Biden. And nothing was really done until his last year in office when he was –
SANDERS: Yes, should have done much better. No argument.
