Biden Calls Trump ‘My Good Friend’ When Asked About Dueling Border Visits During Ice Cream Stop
President Joe Biden mockingly referred to former President Donald Trump as “my good friend” when asked about his upcoming visit to the U.S.-Mexico border.
On Monday morning, the White House announced that Biden will visit the southern border when he travels to Brownsville, Texas on Thursday. Trump will be in Eagle Pass, Texas on Thursday as well, setting up a potential split-screen of photo ops.
Later in the day, the president taped an appearance for Tuesday night’s edition of NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, during which he blasted Trump repeatedly.
After the taping, Biden and host Seth Meyers made an impromptu stop at Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, where the president got some mint chip ice cream and talked to several customers in the ice cream shop, as well as the staff who served him.
He then joked to reporters “I’ve got a little bit of cash, does anyone want ice cream?” and added “It’s not a bribe!”
The president spoke briefly to the reporters and made news about the talks around a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war, and quipped about his “good friend” when a reporter asked about the border trip:
Q Mr. President — Mr. President, you’re heading to the border on Thursday. Why go to the border now, Mr. President? You’re going on Thursday. Why go now?
THE PRESIDENT: I’ve been planning to go Thursday. What I didn’t know is my good friend, apparently, is going.
Q And will you meet with migrants while you’re there, Mr. President?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, I’m not going to announce ahead of time. Secret Service doesn’t like me announcing exactly what I’m going to do.
(Cross-talk.)
Q Can you give us a sense of when you think that ceasefire will start, sir?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, I hope by the beginning of the weekend — I mean the end of the weekend.
At least, my —
Q Say again.
THE PRESIDENT: My National Security Advisor tells me that we’re close. We’re close. It’s not done yet. And my hope is by next Monday, we’ll have a ceasefire.
