Mediaite Presents: 20 Killer Costumes — A Halloween 2009 Retrospective

For some, Halloween is an opportunity to take on a new persona; for others, it's an opportunity to proudly let their true colors fly. Mediaite has combed celebrity sites, media soirees, and the viral web to assemble some of our favorite costumes of Halloween '09. In our travels, we've come across Heidi Klum dressed as a raven, Nick Douglas dressed as PostSecret, Jon Gosselin dressed as a shallow celebrity tabloid cover (!), and much, much more: 1. James Gandolfini as Homer Simpson (image via Dlisted) No, he does not seem to be trying especially hard, but then, would the real Homer? Maybe it's part of the costume. 2. Jon Gosselin as a shallow celebrity wannabe (via Buzzfeed) Some costumes are just too much of a stretch... 3. And if you have a photo, send it on to tips@mediaite.com! 4. Today Show as Star Wars This stunning group costume/spectacle got a bit freaky when the full drunkenness of the Ewoks made itself known. Yes, you read that correctly. 5. Bill O'Reilly on The View as Dracula Surprisingly, a forum in which Elisabeth Hasselbeck is dressed up as a giant box of Count Chocula can lead to some really heated political debate. >>>NEXT: Some great costumes making their rounds on the viral web. And then there's Heidi Klum, Seal, and Perez Hilton... 6. Heidi Klum and Seal as ravens (via Stylefrizz) A very involved costume, to be sure. But are we alone in thinking that this isn't quite up to the astoundingly high standards Heidi Klum has set for herself in the past? 7. A woman as a Roy Lichtenstein painting (via Tasha Marie's Charmed, every image bookmarking blog on the Internets) This costume has exploded on the web over the past week -- and rightly so. Proof that quality and social recommendation sites are not enemies. 8. Some people on the subway in Boston as Wild Things, plus Max (via Casey Donahue) A hat tip is in order to New York Mag's Vulture blog for turning us on to this frighteningly high-quality costume. Definitely beats all of the slutty clogging up the NYC subways on Halloween night... 9. Perez Hilton as Lady Gaga (via Perezhilton.com) No caption necessary. 10. Twitter (via Buzzfeed) It's funny because the fail whale page is the most identifiable feature of Twitter. Seriously though, very well-executed, sir. >>>NEXT: New Media Elites get their Halloween on! Three Wolf Moon, bananas, and PostSecret are involved. 11. 3 Wolf Moon These girls take the Three Wolf Moon shirt to the next level at Urlesque's Hallowe-Meme night.. Nick Douglas as Postsecret This photo was also taken at Urlesque's Hallow-Meme party on Friday, but we have it on the highest authority that Twitter Wit author Nick Douglas recycled it for the main event the next night. Dayman! Fans of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - as we are - will appreciate the attention to detail that went into this Charlie Day costume. Hey Ari, if you're going to put this in your Gchat status update, we're going to pilfer it for a post. Ari and his brother Jonathan are adorable as Twitter and Twitpic. Aw. 20. Lester Holt as Susan Boyle Here you go, your NBC anchor in drag — actually two of them, if you include Amy Robach doing her best Victor/Victoria. I dreamed a dream of going for Halloween as Slutty Susan Boyle, until Lester Holt ruined it for me. Thanks a lot, Lester.
