Commercial Flight Brought to a Grinding Halt Over the Worst Mobile Hotspot Name Ever
You know how some people like to give silly names like “Pretty Fly for a WiFi” or “Tell My Wifi I Love Her” to their home networks and mobile hotspots? Well, someone in Australia tried something like that, and the poorly-conceived joke ended up causing a state of emergency among airport security.
The West Australian reported this morning that a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Perth was delayed after a passenger tried to get Internet on the plane, only to find a hotspot named “Mobile Detonation Device.” Crew members were alerted to the disturbing name, and the pilot gave a PA notice that the plane wasn’t going anywhere until the hotspot source was located.
“He said there was a device on the plane that had a name on it that he found threatening and that we were not leaving until that device was brought to him,” passenger John Vidler said to Yahoo!7.
Security said the plane was safe to fly, but after they failed to find the device and no one fessed up, around 40 people decided to disembark rather than fly. Baggage retrieval and returning the passengers to the terminal led to further delay, and the plane was approximately two hours late when it eventually arrived at Perth.
