Cops Who Edited Eric Garner Wikipedia Page Have Been ID’d, Won’t Be Punished

The NYPD launched an internal investigation into edits on the Wikipedia pages for Eric Garner and others traced back to NYPD IP addresses.

For example, “Garner raised both his arms in the air” was changed to “Garner flailed his arms about as he spoke” and the sentence “Garner, who was considerably larger than any of the officers, continued to struggle with them” was added.

As a result of the investigation, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton announced today they have identified the officers responsible, but “I do not anticipate any punishment.” He did say they’ve been “admonished.”

Bratton said these officers can do what they want on their own time and on their own devices, but also noted, “We are in the process of reviewing our social media policies. Wikipedia would be one where right now we don’t have a policy specific to accessing that site.”
