The terrorist group known as ISIS or ISIL has horrified the world for the past few weeks with sickening displays of brutality. And so it comes across as odd, to say the least, that one Democratic candidate tweeted last night that the “actions of Republicans in Congress are worse than ISIL.”
Yes, this is the tweet sent out by Jesse Smith (a Democrat running to represent Alabama’s 3rd congressional district) last night:

Smith took to Facebook this morning to make it incredibly clear he’s not suggesting that Republicans are worse than a terrorist group that beheads Americans (the most recent and horrifying example of such coming today). Here’s what he had to say, though:
I am not saying that the republican party is beheading people in the streets, obviously. Here in America, because we are a civilized democracy, we do not use violence against each other as a means of control. The republicans have used the economy as a means to terrorize the people of this country. Raising interest on student loan rates, trying to privatize social security, passing tax cuts that only help the super wealthy, cutting the food stamp budget for the neediest of people. These are all examples of how the republican party is terrorizing the middle and lower classes of America.
