Don Lemon Goes Off: ‘We Are Making Excuses for People Who Are Divorced from Reality’

CNN’s Don Lemon tonight expressed his frustration with people who are “divorced from reality” in a conversation about falsehoods from President Trump.

He said, “There are some Americans who simply cannot trust President Trump because he is a serial liar.”

JD Vance recalled what fellow panelist and CNN contributor Salena Zito wrote last year explaining how Trump voters take him seriously, but not literally. But as opposed to the campaign, Lemon said, “it makes no sense when you’re the President of the United States if people can’t believe the words that come out of your mouth.”

Zito recalled a conversation she had with a woman who said she likes the way Trump speaks––that having a president “not talk like a perfectly measured politician” is a welcome thing.

Lemon said, “With all due respect to that woman, that is divorced from reality.”

Zito said there needs to be some discussion of “what have we done over the past 30 years in American politics that we have pushed people to feel this way.”

Lemon responded thusly:

“No one should be pushed to ever believe something that’s not true. If someone is telling you the truth, it’s backed up by facts and by research. And so if you are a person who is not divorced from reality and you have all your wits about you, then you need to believe the truth. Basically we are making excuses for people who are divorced from reality. I know that’s hard to hear, but it’s the truth.”
