A lawyer for El Chapo is strongly disputing one quote Sean Penn attributed to the drug kingpin in his big Rolling Stone interview.
Penn wrote about how candid his subject was in talking about his business. One quote he attributed to El Chapo was, “I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world. I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats.”
Rolling Stone placed an editor’s note at the top of the piece saying they gave the whole piece to El Chapo for approval but he had no notes.
However, one of El Chapo’s lawyers told Reuters that the above quote was a complete “lie” and “absurd speculation from Mr. Penn.”
Juan Pablo Badillo said his client “could not have made these claims,” praising El Chapo as “intelligent” and asking, “Where’s the proof? Where’s the audio?”
He admitted that this complicates El Chapo’s defense in court. Badillo said, “Mr. Penn should be called to testify to respond about the stupidities he has said.”
In a brief statement earlier this week, Penn himself said he has “nothin’ to hide” about how he went about getting the meeting or the actual interview itself.
