Rep. Eric Cantor On Senate-Passed Fiscal Cliff Deal: ‘I Do Not Support The Bill’
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor expressed his opposition to the Senate-passed fiscal cliff deal Tuesday, potentially jeopardizing the bill. “I do not support the bill,” he said, while walking out of a meeting with House Republicans to discuss the plan.
The proposed deal would include an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for family incomes below $450,000 and individual incomes below $400,000. The deal would also include a two-month delay on sequestration, with a 50-50 mix of spending cuts and revenue to pay for it.
The sticking point among House Republicans, including Cantor, appears to be the lack of spending cuts in the Senate bill.
Cantor said that as yet, no decisions have been made on the bill.
House Speaker John Boehner declined to answer questions as he exited the meeting.
Spokespeople for Boehner and Cantor put out identical statements today which explained that they had “laid out options to the members and listened to feedback” on the deal.
The statements noted,
“The lack of spending cuts in the Senate bill was a universal concern amongst members in today’s meeting. Conversations with members will continue throughout the afternoon on the path forward.”
