Good Morning America Beats Today in Yearly Ratings
Good Morning America achieved a “once in a generation” change, in the words of New York Times’ media critic Brian Stelter, as it beat the Today Show in yearly ratings for the first time since the 1993-94 season.
G.M.A. attracted 5.3 million on an average weekday between September 2012 and September 2013, easily beating Today’s haul of 4.6 million, though the two remained neck-and-neck in the coveted 25-54 demographic.
CBS This Morning lagged behind with 2.77 million average viewers, though that was a boost from its previous year average of 2.44 million.
Until April 2012, Today had led G.M.A. in ratings for 852 straight weeks. Stelter attributed some of the switch in rankings to Today’s much-publicized dismissal of Ann Curry, which alienated a chunk of viewers.
