Kanye Shares More Opinions About George W. Bush While Accepting Honorary Doctorate

Kanye West worked a sly call back to his post-Hurricane Katrina comments about then-President George W. Bush into a short speech he delivered this week while accepting an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Dr. West, as you can now improbably call the rapper, opened his remarks with an apology: “I’m sorry, that was just my opinion.” He then went on to explain that as a “pop artist” his medium is “public opinion” and “the world” is his canvas. By using the words “I’m sorry” judiciously, West said he can repeatedly give his opinion without the fear of repercussions.
With that, he teased one of his most infamous opinions. “George Bush…” he said, pausing for the crowd to anticipate what might be coming next. But instead of finishing that sentence with “doesn’t care about black people” as he did in September 2005, he remarked that the former president “has some very cool self portraits.” He then added, “I didn’t know he was an artist!”
Reached by The Daily Beast’s Asawin Suebsaeng, a spokesperson for the George W. Bush Presidential Center, which is currently displaying an exhibition of Bush world leader portraits, reportedly laughed and said, “We have no comment on this, but thanks for asking!”
