Katy Perry Didn’t Let Parents Attend Her Obama Inauguration Performance Live Because They’re Republicans
Katy Perry, like most Hollywood stars, is a pretty vocal supporter of President Obama, and sometimes that can lead to an awkward moment or two if your less famous parents don’t see eye to eye. And Perry revealed to Marie Claire this week that her parents wanted to watch her perform at Obama’s inauguration this year live, but she shot them down because of how they voted.
Perry’s parents are Evangelicals, and she made it clear that despite their political differences, they have a good relationship. But it was just too much for her when they asked to see her perform at Obama’s second inauguration.
“My parents are Republicans, and I’m not. They didn’t vote for Obama, but when I was asked to sing at the inauguration, they were like, ‘We can come.’ And I was like, ‘No, you can’t. I love you so much, but that—on principle.’ They understood, but I was like, ‘How dare you?’ in a way.”
Perry’s political activism hasn’t gone unnoticed by the president, as during the MTV VMAs this year, after she retweeted a message about Obamacare to her millions of followers, Obama’s Twitter account actually replied with this.
