Kevin Hart Posts Cryptic Message After Don Lemon Asks Him to Become an Ally to Homosexual Community
Kevin Hart posted a cryptic message on Instagram ostensibly in response to CNN’s Don Lemon this weekend.
Lemon called out Hart’s lack of apology over past homophobic comments that came to light and appear to have, at least temporarily, caused the comedian to step down from hosting the 2019 Academy Awards ceremony on ABC. Lemon’s remarkable emotional plea called out the plight of homosexual kids, particularly in the black community, a matter of “life or death” before asking for Hart to become an ally to the LGBT community.
Lemon’s call for Hart to become an ally went viral over the weekend, which led to Hart to reply via a text message posted on Instagram:
Hart then added in the comments section of the Instagram post: “When did we get to the point where we forgot that we all learn, then we all have the ability to grow and with that growth comes a wealth of knowledge. You can’t change without a understanding of what GROWTH means. #Message #LiveLoveLaugh #HappySaturday …..Please grasp this and use it in 2019”
Hart has received a significant amount of criticism for his handling of this controversy, best exemplified by the following Tweet:
It is remarkable to see Kevin Hart do a media blitz to drive the false narrative that he is a victim in a controversy of his own creation. It’s also quite curious to see he’s only talking to white people about it. https://t.co/VZuudg6GqP

It’s not clear exactly what Hart is getting at in his Instagram post, other than an acknowledgment that everyone grows in their career. One can charitably see this as an admission that he has grown in his understanding of the plight of gay children in the black community, but that’s not explicitly stated. Nor is there a clear apology, or acceptance of Lemon’s challenge to become an ally.
But there is the comment that a “news anchor or journalist does not start at the top” — which could be interpreted as a dig at Lemon.
