McCain Calls on Trump to Denounce ‘Repugnant’ Attacks on McMaster by the Alt-Right

Senator John McCain has become the latest Republican to come out to defending National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster as he continues to get attacked by the alt-right.

As the attacks on McMaster continue, following the firing of an NSC official who wrote a bonkers memo, McCain came out today with a pretty blunt statement defending him.

The statement invokes Charlottesville, saying the attacks against McMaster “arise from the same purveyors of hatred and ignorance who precipitated the recent violence in Charlottesville.”

And the Arizona senator specifically calls on the President to condemn these attacks:

I have had the pleasure of knowing General H.R. McMaster for many years, and greatly respect and admire his outstanding service to the nation. The recent attacks upon him from the so-called ‘alt-right’ are disgraceful. Since this fringe movement cannot attract the support of decent Americans, it resorts to impugning the character of a good man and outstanding soldier who has served honorably in uniform and sacrificed more for our country than any of his detractors ever have. Such smear tactics should not be tolerated and deserve an emphatic response. I hope the President will once again stand up for his national security adviser and denounce these repugnant attacks, which arise from the same purveyors of hatred and ignorance who precipitated the recent violence in Charlottesville.

President Trump did put out a statement earlier this month, as people were turning on McMaster, in which the President praised him as a “good man” and said they are “working very well together.”
