NBC And CBS Reject Ground Zero Mosque Ad…For Good Reason
If this ad were not so utterly offensive I imagine CBS and NBC would find themselves the latest target of liberal media elite accusations from the right. As it is, it’s hard to argue with the networks’ decision not to air this spot, put together by the far right (and according the Ben Smith, well-funded) National Republican Trust PAC, opposing the building of a mosque at Ground Zero. It is pretty appalling.
The ad, oh so subtly titled ‘Kill the Ground Zero Mosque,’ uses incredibly graphic images from Sept. 11th, combined with images of Muslims praying, along with a voiceover that says “On September 11, they declared war against us…And to celebrate that murder of 3,000 Americans, they want to build a monstrous 13-story mosque at Ground Zero.”
The conclusion the viewer is encouraged to draw essentially being that Osama bin Laden is building this mosque. Or something very much to that effect.
In rejecting the ad NBC Universal advertising standards manager Jennifer Riley said
“An ad questioning the wisdom of building a mosque at ground zero would meet our issues of public controversy advertising criteria. However, this ad which ambiguously defines ‘they’ as referenced in the spot makes it unclear as to whether the reference is to terrorists or to the Islamic religious organization that is sponsoring the building of the mosque. Consequently, the ad is not acceptable under our guidelines for broadcast.”
The ad is below. As I said, it contains some very graphic images.
