NBC News Uses Stock Photo of Labour Party British Politician For Story on Flu Season
Although he may not be a household name in the United States, Ed Miliband is a British politician formerly of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition. The long Member of Parliament announced his resignation last year after suffering a surprise defeat to the Conservative Party, and was once considered a possible fit for Prime Minister.
But now, it would seem as if Miliband — or, at least, a photo of him blowing his nose — is the stuff of stock photo legend for the NBC Nightly News.
On Sunday night’s broadcast anchored by Kristen Welker, the program began a segment on the ills of flu season. “Flu season has arrived,” said Welker, “and there are fresh concerns that many school districts are seeing an uptick.”
But the photo that accompanied the segment was of Milibrand himself blowing his nose. The image comes from a Getty Images gallery tagged “Brand Name Tissue Pictures and Images,” a gallery that shows famous people all wiping their noses; the list includes the likes of Pope Francis, John Boehner, and tennis star Novak Djokovic.
The header for the original Miliband photo reads, “Labour Party Focuses On Health And Education.” The caption for the Christopher Furlong image — which is dated September 28, 2011 — reads:
Labour leader Ed Miliband wipes his nose during a break in a television interview at the annual Labour party conference at the Echo Arena on September 28, 2011 in Liverpool, England. Speakers from Labour’s shadow cabinet addressed Labour leader Ed Miliband wipes his nose during a break in a television interview at the annual Labour party conference at the Echo Arena on September 28, 2011 in Liverpool, England.
