Newark Mayor Cory Booker has won the New Jersey Senate special election, defeating Republican challenger Steve Lonegan, filling the Senate seat vacated after the death of long-serving Democrat Frank Lautenberg.
Booker will be the first black senator from New Jersey, and at 44, one of the youngest in the Senate. The campaign was marred by controversy, including the strange saga of Twitter DMs Booker exchanged with a stripper.
After the win was made official, Booker, a prolific Tweeter, sent this out to his followers.
