Obama’s Approval Ratings Mirror American Support For Gun Control, According To New Poll

A new poll by TIME/CNN/ORC finds that President Obama‘s approval ratings almost directly correspond with the number of Americans who favor tighter regulations on guns. The majority of Americans, 55%, approve of the job Obama is doing as president, compared to just 43% who disapprove. The numbers are almost identical to the percentage of Americans who want to see increased gun legislation – 55% – versus those who don’t, 44%.

Obama pitched an extensive list of new gun control legislation Wednesday amidst criticism from the NRA and other gun advocates who believe any new legislative measures to ban assault weapons or curb high capacity magazine sales are unconstitutional.

The poll finds that Obama’s approval rating jumped significantly after his re-election and fight over the fiscal cliff. Vice President Joe Biden‘s approval rating has jumped as well, to 59% from 54% last month.

The poll surveyed 814 adults between January 14 and 15 and has a sampling error of 3.5 percentage points.
