Paul Ryan Posts Selfie With All His Interns, Internet Freaks Out Over One Detail…
Oh, Paul Ryan… what have you done?
Remember when the editors from Huffington Post tried to post a group selfie to show off how many women they had on staff, but — whoops! — accidentally forgot to hire any people of color? Remember how they got totally raked over the coals for that? Their hurry to show off how many women they had blinded them, which kind of happened to Ryan yesterday, too. He was trying to show off how many young people are interested in politics but once again, failed spectacularly when it came to diversity among those young people.
Look:
Some comments over on the Instagram post include, “Operation: Find Melanin” and “This is why our leaders can’t understand the problems in the inner city and African American issues. The is a farm of like minded individuals.”
It’s only gotten worse on Twitter, where #InternsSoWhite has been used to lampoon the pic.
@SpeakerRyan not sure you noticed but looks like a black kid snuck in there while u weren’t looking. #InternsSoWhite pic.twitter.com/PsuL63Q9Mf

TODAY I LEARNED: The Internship program for the US House of Representatives is whiter than Idaho. #InternsSoWhite pic.twitter.com/8yZCjWYUng

It’s moving to see people of all hair colors come together like this. (h/t @heif) pic.twitter.com/Zn2cZzKlqA

An editor from HuffPo even got in there to exact a little revenge:
There’s something about this photo, I can’t quite place it… pic.twitter.com/ZahcIHHTva

HuffPo isn’t the only big publication that has faced criticism over its lack of diversity, though, and others, like Gawker, were promptly dragged into the fray just to be insulted:
@Gawker wait never mind just spotted a black person sitting near the back; hope I have not offended with this mistake

Last but not least, Ryan’s colleagues have spoken out, too:
.@SpeakerRyan, in this day & age, there’s no excuse for not having diverse staff & interns. https://t.co/8SUrigUxaK

Ryan hasn’t responded to the criticism.
