Poll Finds Almost Half the Country Doesn’t Care Who Controls Congress
Political activists, party loyalists, and journalists are very fixated on which party will win the midterm elections this November. But according to a new AP poll, most Americans just don’t give a crap. An AP-GfK poll finds that 46 percent of Americans believe it truly “doesn’t matter” who controls Congress, a result both sides will likely find disturbing for different reasons.
That aside, Democrats do have a slight edge, with 37 percent preferring them controlling Congress to the Republicans’ 31 percent. But “doesn’t matter” towers above both, with one possible explanation being that most people just don’t see any direct impact on their lives no matter which party is in control.
In fact, one New Mexico voter said, “I think that in general people who are in Congress and people who have enough money to run for Congress are only in it for themselves… I don’t see very many who are really interested in serving.”
One metric the GOP has the advantage on is enthusiasm; the poll says more conservative Republicans are concerned about their party taking control than liberal Democrats are.
