Just to give you some idea of what to expect at next week’s GOP debate, Rand Paul joked today, “I think I was a little too easy on Donald Trump last time.”
Yes, Paul plans to continue going after the GOP frontrunner for the foreseeable future. After Rick Perry––another fierce Trump critic––dropped out of the race yesterday, Paul praised him and asked what it says about the Republican party that a governor with a strong record has to drop out while the frontrunner continues to be a “reality star.”
In an interview with Politico today, Paul made the same point, lamenting how “the media continues to reinforce a celebrity that really doesn’t have qualifications for office and in fact would alarm me if he were in charge of our nuclear weapons.”
“So, really,” he continued, “I think it’s a serious versus the unserious. And there is a danger that if we continue to laud so much attention on basically someone whose level of discourse is that of junior high, I think there’s a problem, there’s a great risk for the country.”
Paul thinks he still has a good shot at winning the Republican nomination, but every time Trump’s brought him up recently, he’s mocked the Kentucky senator’s low poll numbers.
