Sarah Sanders on Allegations Against Trump: Franken ‘Admitted Wrongdoing and the President Hasn’t’
As one would expect after President Donald Trump waded into the discussion on Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) groping and forcible kissing scandal, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was pressed by reporters during today’s press briefing about Trump’s past history of sexual assault allegations and his relative silence on Roy Moore.
“If it is fair to investigate Al Franken and the allegation made by his accuser, is it also fair to investigate this president and the allegations of sexual misconduct made against him by more than a dozen women?” ABC News’ Cecilia Vega asked.
After Sanders said that this had been covered extensively during the election and the American people still elected Trump president, Vega asked her how this was different than Franken.
“I think in one case specifically Senator Franken has admitted wrongdoing and the president hasn’t,” the press secretary responded. “I think that’s a very clear distinction.”
Sanders was then grilled by CBS News’ Major Garrett on remarks she made earlier about Moore’s accusers and how Alabama voters could find the truth in a court of law. Asked if she was advising Moore to sue his accusers, Sanders said she would refer that to Moore himself. Pressed on whether she meant he should sue, Sanders did state that was one option he could take.
The CBS News reporter then pointed out that Trump threatened to sue all of his female accusers prior to the election but never followed through with it, asking Sanders why the president didn’t go down that promised route.
“I haven’t asked him that question,” she said. “I’d have to ask him and let you know why he hasn’t chosen to take that path.”
After taking a couple of more questions about Moore and Franken, Sanders was questioned by Politico’s Matthew Nussbaum on whether it was still the White House’s position that all of the women who accused Trump of sexual misconduct were lying.
“The president has spoken about this multiple times throughout the campaign and has denied all of those allegations,” she answered.
