TMZ caught up with Al Sharpton today to get his response to people criticizing him for being in Ferguson, Missouri, including an NBA player who went so far as to call him a “coon.” Gilbert Arenas said Sharpton has no business being in Ferguson, because he’s only making the situation worse and looking for attention.
Sharpton professed not to know who Arenas was, and said “using a racial term tells you more about him than me.” He insisted he did not come just for himself; “the family asked me to come.”
Sharpton touted his own record in cases like these and insisted this isn’t just about attention for himself. He said, “Maybe the people that are criticizing are criticizing for the wrong reason. Why don’t they help us out?”
And it’s not just Arenas, Ferguson mayor James Knowles said yesterday that he’s concerned about Sharpton’s presence turning the situation in Ferguson into a “national spectacle.”
