Tavis Smiley said this week that the reason Bernie Sanders didn’t do better with black voters is because there was a much stronger “familiarity” with Hillary Clinton and her husband.
Smiley said the black community “needs to learn about how this game is played” and they shouldn’t be calling people “haters” when they’re trying to simply hold black candidates accountable.
As for Sanders, Smiley said that he simply wasn’t quick enough to appeal to black voters, given their long history with the Clintons:
“[Because of] our loyalty to the Clintons… Bernie just didn’t get the lookover… He didn’t get the lookover he deserved. He didn’t get the lookover he deserved, but on the issues––Bernie is so right on the issues––but when you have a 25-30 year relationship with the community… you get it, I get it, it is what it is.”
