A Japanese macaque has been caught on camera trying to mate with a Sika deer. According to The Daily Mail, the two animals coexist peacefully in the wild in Japan, and occasionally, they interact. Sika deer have been known to eat food the macaques have dropped and actually on occasion eat monkey feces. Macaques also sometimes groom the deer and ride them playfully, but their interactions typically aren’t sexual.
This particular macaque has attempted to mate with at least two deer. According to the BBC the macaque is likely a low-status male, who guards the deer he’s interested in by shoo-ing away other macaques when they get close.
