Tommy Hilfiger: Designers ‘Should be Proud’ to Dress Melania Trump
Last week, designer Sophie Theallet, whose clients include First Lady Michelle Obama wrote an open letter saying that she refuses to dress Melania Trump, and called on other designers to do the same.
Tommy Hilfiger is taking a stand on the other side. While at the Angel Ball in New York City this week, he spoke to Women’s Wear Daily. When asked how he felt about the situation, he said that he didn’t want to politicize it. He told WWD, “I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her. Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes.” He continued, “I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle [Obama] as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.”
Throughout the campaign, Melania and Ivanka purchased most of their own clothes, and wore things from Ivanka’s collection. So far, Hilfiger is the first major voice to speak out about dressing the future FLOTUS. Maybe others will be inspired to do the same.
