President Donald Trump appeared to back down from his threat to Russia that missiles “will be coming” to Syria, tweeting on Thursday morning that he “[never] said when” a strike would occur.
Trump’s Wednesday morning tweets set off alarm bells that the U.S. was planning an imminent strike on Syria in response to Bashar al-Assad’s alleged chemical attack on a suburb near Damascus.
On Thursday morning, however, Trump issued a clarification: “Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Could be very soon or not so soon at all!”
He also touted his administration’s campaign against ISIS, and asked why no one is saying: “Thank you America?”

Trump’s tweet could be inspired by criticisms that he was “telegraphing” his military moves to the enemy, something he decried the Obama White House for and promised his “unpredictable” administration would never do.
For comical effect, the president added another tweet wishing Mike Pompeo luck in his confirmation hearing to be secretary of state (he’s going to need it):
