WATCH LIVE: Basketball Teams Don’t Show Up for NCAA Champions Event With Trump
At the White House today at 11:30 AM ET, President Donald Trump is scheduled to host a number of NCAA championship teams at the White House. The administration has not sent out a list of the teams that will be present at the ceremony — but both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have said they do not plan to attend.
Trump previously welcomed the national football champion Clemson Tigers in June. Since then, both the men’s and women’s Division I basketball champs have stated they will not be able to visit the White House.
The North Carolina men’s basketball team said earlier this year that they wouldn’t be able to make it because the team couldn’t agree on a date. Last night, the coach of the South Carolina women’s team explained that her squad would also be skipping a visit.
“We did hear from the White House about attending [Friday’s] event, but we will not be able to attend,” coach Dawn Staley stated. “As I’ve been saying since our practices for this season started, all of our focus is on the season ahead. The only invitation we are thinking about is to the 2018 NCAA Tournament.”
In recent months, the president has gotten involved in public flaps with professional athletes. Besides spending weeks criticizing NFL athletes for protesting racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem, Trump also took shots at the Golden State Warriors and star Steph Curry. After Curry said he wasn’t interested in meeting Trump, the president rescinded an invite for the NBA champs to visit the White House.
