LIVE STREAM President Trump Gives Comments On The Opioid Crisis
President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak Thursday on the opioid crisis and to how his administration plans to combat demand for drugs in America.
The president is set to go live with his comments at 2:00 p.m. EST (punk rock timing permitted). Many are looking to how the president will publicly respond to this growing social epidemic, particularly given reports that Trump plans to declare the crisis a a public health emergency.
On that declaration, the New York Times notes:
The move falls short of Mr. Trump’s sweeping promise to declare a national emergency on opioids, which would have triggered the rapid allocation of federal funding to address the issue, and does not on its own release any money to deal with the drug abuse that claimed more than 59,000 lives in 2016.
It will also be interesting to see how much of an effect Chris Christie’s efforts have had with the president on this issue.
As we noted earlier in our recap of his recent GQ profile, Christie has been the head of the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioids Crisis. In the interview, Christie is noted as having scaled down the commission’s draft report on the crisis to “one third” of its original size so that Trump could better digest the findings.
