WDBJ Shooting Suspect Sued Former Employer Claiming He Was Called a ‘Monkey’
WDBJ shooting suspect Bryce Williams claimed he was subjected to discriminatory statements while at the network, and he also sued another station he worked at for discrimination.
Williams (also known as Vester Flanagan) filed a lawsuit against Tallahassee station WTWC, where he began working in 1999.
The lawsuit, obtained by Talking Points Memo, claims Williams was “the victim of race based practices and discrimination.” A producer allegedly called him a “monkey” and other comments about “lazy” blacks and speaking ebonics were allegedly used in the workplace.
Williams claimed he was let go after complaining about such incidents. WTWC said he was let go because of his “poor performance,” “misbehavior with regards to co-workers,” “refusal to follow directions,” “use of profanity on the premises,” et cetera.
They expressly denied he was discriminated against due to his race.
