The Trump administration has been publicly slamming CNN after that retracted Russia report that led to three resignations, and a new report tonight gives some insight into how they were reacting internally.
You’ve likely heard by now that CNN retracted a report linking Trump ally Anthony Scaramucci to one of the Russia investigations. Three staffers resigned this week, and both President Trump and Sarah Huckabee Sanders have been openly criticizing CNN.
Politico‘s Hadas Gold reports tonight on how the White House believes this will help them in their attacks on the press:
Many White House staffers were “elated,” a person with knowledge of their conversations said, when they learned that three journalists had resigned over a botched story that claimed newly appointed Export-Import bank official Anthony Scaramucci was being investigated for his ties to a Russian investment fund.
Gold also reports that within CNN, the retraction scandal has been seen as “embarrassing” by some staffers who lament “having given Trump such powerful ammunition.”
More recently, the Trump administration has been highlighting the undercover Project Veritas videos of two individuals at CNN talking in dismissive terms about the Russia investigations. The President himself has even posted clips from those videos to his Instagram.
The Politico report contains this tidbit of information:
The videos haven’t prompted any internal actions, as CNN executives have said they stand by their employees who are free to have personal opinions, especially when they aren’t reporting on the White House or politics.
